My interest in architectural design is to pursue the possibility of architecture through looking at the reality of urban environments and the living behaviour that surrounds us today. In the Bachelor of Architecture Studio, I focus on architectural design through the probability of the building element. Through this master’s course, I would like to deep dive into architectural design with your studio based on indigenous culture and response to cultural roles, as well as digital computer architectural design.
Through my prior work in university, I tried to re-define how architecture and environment should exist through observing and analysing external factors. In one project, I re-defined ‘fences’ which are completely separate from each house in Japanese suburban areas. My idea is that re-designing fences allows the community to interact with neighbours. I thought about changing the relationship between people and space and discovering new landscapes by shifting the relationships between the elements such as fences.
In an extracurricular activity, I participated in an architecture workshop where architectural students designed and built several follies inside Todaiji temple. This temple has a history of around 1300 years. Therefore, I had to investigate research of the location and history and then determine the concept design. The goal was to create a new shape based on the sense of location and utilisation of natural materials while being influenced by traditional construction. Our team was to design the folly to express the unique dark space of Nandai-mon Gate of Todaiji temple with pine skin, peculiar to Todaiji temple. Through this experience, I learnt the importance of perspective from response to its cultural and historical roles. This experience fostered my interest in the field of architectural design, engaged with history and culture.
I am convinced that active interaction with international students would enable me to expand my ideas and vision based on critical thinking and a variety of perspectives, such as sustainability, culture, and history. From this point of view, studying at 😀 is appealing to me because it offers me a broad course and studio with different fields and skills. In addition, unlike Japanese universities, I suppose that 😀 is a place where I can pursue “what is architecture” from a variety of opinions and values, as there are various ways of thinking about architecture among excellent students and professors from all over the world. This opportunity would help broaden my horizon and will help me find my own answer to architecture. Of course, I am eager to contribute to your student community by sharing the knowledge and experience that I have learned during my undergraduate course and extracurricular activity.
My future vision is to be a professional architect and contribute to international society through architectural design. I am confident that your program would provide both skills and inspiration to enable me to express my architectural design.
